For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet FOR YOUR SAKE He became poor, that YOU through His poverty might become rich. – 2 Corinthians 8:9

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday, Phil, one of the elders, announced that we will be establishing a Berean Church Disaster Relief Fund for those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Starting this Sunday and continuing throughout the fall season and perhaps beyond, the elders have decided to lead our church family in setting aside personal financial resources so that we can meet the growing needs of our neighbors all over the Southern United States. This is not an American thing – it is a humane thing. And it is a Jesus Christ thing, who is the greatest example of One who gave His all on the cross to meet our personal and spiritual needs.

What better way for us to minister the gospel that we so graciously received and do not deserve. Of course it would be wonderful to take each life and share the grace and love of Jesus personally, but that would be impossible. We desire to give because He gave not from His wealth but became poor to make others rich.

There are huge needs. Many have lost their lives and many more have lost everything except their lives and the clothes on their backs. The pictures we see are reminders of our desperate state and brokenness without the cross.

We lay no blame on government officials and instead want to fight our selfish greed and materialism in the name of Jesus Christ and because of the cross of Jesus Christ. The Church throughout her history always responded to such human devastation and tragedy. This is an incredible opportunity and privilege for us to put the gospel that we have received, glory in, and preach into action.

You may not be able to give much, but in the weeks to come, sacrifice in order to share out of your wealth. Forsake a movie, a favorite dinner spot, a new CD, something material, etc. in order to be able to offer what the Lord lays on your heart. Think and most of all pray big so that you can see God work through you. Also remember to give above and beyond your regular giving to the church and your missionaries/ministries.

One last note- fight the ever so present blame game and cry of irresponsibility that is so easy to fall into. This disaster is not the judgment of God on anyone because they are bigger sinners than we are. We all take advantage of God’s goodness, but we must especially remember how much He has poured out His grace and love on us.
